Summary

The American Express Platinum Card has long been a status symbol of the McMansion crowd. In seeking to refine their clientele, American Express focused on the benefits that come with holding the Platinum card. Just holding. Little incentive exists to actually use the Platinum Card. Only 1 MR per dollar on the vast majority of purchases? Even their 5X "refresh" can't really change the tide on most purchases. To add on to their retention problems, a 40,000 point signup bonus is pretty measly in comparison to the 100,000 point offer of the competition. And I'm not even being a Chase shill here. Many will, however, point out that the benefits are where the card truly finds its value. That point cannot be debated. Lounge access is second-to-none, as is the concierge service, and hotel privileges. But that still isn't enough to make it worth enough to use, and will relegate it, for me at least, to the back of the wallet.

40k is not the highest offer. I strongly recommend you apply this card when the highest offer (100k) available. The benefits of this card is definitely amazing. SPG Gold + Marriott Gold + Hilton Gold. The lost protection insurance of Amex is also the best among all the cards.

Definitely wait for the periodic targeted 100K offers that get sent or accidentally released. IMPORTANT: DO NOT MS ON THIS CARD, they will claw your points back. Overall the card is one to have, not to use. Earning rates are still not that good for the personal card, especially since Amextravel portal has some odd quirks to it.

As said before me, wait for a 100K offer. Watch Flyertalk and reddit /r/churning to see when one pops up. Besides that, the benefits are fantastic, but I wouldn’t really put much spend on it, besides flights if I decide to book through the Amex portal. One of their lower MR earning cards could do much better on normal spend like groceries.

I love this card for traveling. The Centurion lounges are fantastic if you fly through them often. I’m not sure if Delta will end their deal, though. Right now, this card is good if you travel a lot and can use the benefits effectively.
